Girls
Thursday, December 5, 2013
We are a family of girls. Sorry Ben and B, you guys are totally outnumbered! Even though sometimes they drive me up the wall and bring out the worst in me, I love these girls of mine with all my heart. The littlest one likes to drive me crazy now as well, but we'll have to forgive her for that. ;)
Olivia is our girly girl that likes to dress up in princess outfits and dance around the house being beautiful. She loves lip gloss, perfume, jewelry. Mila, on the other hand, is more of a tomboy and likes to be comfortable most of all. She likes to look nice, but doesn't over think it. She loves braids in her hair. She was never into dolls too much, never took an interest in Barbies, and loves a lot of the same things Ben likes (especially soccer). Her and Ben have become really good friends in the last few months, and it warms my heart to see it. I didn't expect it since they're over 3 years apart and Olivia and Mila are only a year and 9 months apart, so it's interesting to witness. They love to play board games together, play trampoline games, listen to Adventures in Odyssey on the radio, and have sleepovers in Ben's room on the weekends. Olivia lives in her own little world these days, a bit more separate from them, but I bet this will change as she gets older. The older two find her annoying sometimes, ha ha!
Oh, these kids of mine... Some days are so frustrating and draining when no matter how many times I say to keep their backpacks out of the walkway, or put their coats and shoes away, or to put their dishes in the sink, or keep the bathroom tidy, it's like they never heard me. I thank God for his grace in moments like these, because I need it often when I lose my temper or do things with a begrudging heart instead of out of love and with patience and kindness. I still have so much to learn about being a parent, but I am so thankful for all 3 of my girls and my boy. I don't know what I'd do without them.

Baby girl at 4 months
In that last picture I laid her down on the ugliest but warmest blanket ever (ha ha) so I could finish getting ready to go out, and I noticed while up there that it was really quiet downstairs. I came down to this sweetness. Which is amazing, because none of my kids ever just zonked out anywhere but their bed.

60 days of juicing
I don't even know how to start. I just realized I took two months off from blogging, and I didn't even know I was going to do it. Sometimes life happens when you have other plans, right? This picture is what was going on at the time, and now just a little bit later everything's different and it's all about Christmas! I've missed this place, and I'm glad to be back! Just don't have any expectations of me being at all consistent with my posting schedule. :) It's always hard for me to squeeze blogging in my day anyway, but then I guess it just became too much. From the time I get up to the time I lay down to sleep I'm doing, doing, doing, trying to get ahead and check things off my list, and it just hasn't been working. So I took a different approach and have tried to slow down lately and let myself slack a bit. And it's felt gooood.
A lot has happened in the past two months, but the biggest thing, as many of you Instagram followers know, is I've been on a juice fast since October 20th. I'm on day 47 and I have only 13 more to go to reach my goal of 60 days!! I've been itching to try it since sometime during my pregnancy when I watched all these health nut documentaries on Netflix, but I knew I had to wait until I was done nursing Naomi to start. Well, I had been slowly running out of breastmilk, and then all of a sudden my supply took a sharp nosedive when Naomi was teething and really unhappy, and I made the decision to stop altogether at the 4-month mark. I bought my first 5-day supply of fruit and veggies and the next day I was juicing. I can't believe it's been 2 months since I stopped breastfeeding, and it makes me sad to think about it, but at least Naomi got 4 good months of milk out of it.
My reasons for the juice fast--1) I wanted to lose weight and 2) I wanted to see if it would heal my arthritis. Joe Cross from the Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead documentary set out on a 60-day juice fast to lose weight and heal an autoimmune disease he had, and he succeeded! Watching his journey was so inspiring for me, and I vowed I would give it a try. Rheumatoid arthritis is also an autoimmune disease, so I was really hopeful that my body would heal itself through the juicing process just like his did. I'm so happy to report that I feel a million times better! I wouldn't say it's gone, but the pain doesn't bug me throughout my day at all! The best way to really test my joints out is to start working out or running daily and see what happens then.
The most amazing thing to me, however, has been how my knee has improved so drastically in such a short time! It just floors me. My RA doctor told me that once damage occurs to joints, it can't be reversed, so when I realized my knee was hurting more and more over a period of weeks when I stood on it, and then I couldn't put pressure on it at all because of the pain, I became so discouraged. I figured this was the beginning of the end for me. I knew I hadn't hurt my knee and that it was most likely an arthritic nodule that was causing the pain. It felt like a pebble was imbedded under my skin. I am still in awe at the way God, in his infinite wisdom, designed the human body, and I'm so thankful he opened my eyes and gave me the wisdom and knowledge to help my body heal.
We are meant to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and to eat whole foods instead of the processed, packaged foods we consume today. And we are not meant to have access to all the sugar we eat today either. It's so simple--if we give our body what it needs, it will heal itself and prevent diseases from developing in the future. It will be a well-oiled machine that functions at its highest level, without energy drinks or coffee or steroids to improve our performance. I wish we were all taught that in school. We don't need fancy drugs with a list of side effects a mile long. We don't need elaborate surgeries, or chemo, or radiation. Those things all have a place, but if we all knew to take care of our bodies naturally before resorting to other methods, I think we would all be better for it. And God knows our insurance premiums would be lower.
When I started juicing, I didn't feel horrible before I felt better. It may be because I ate my fair share of vegetables already, and I have never bought much packaged food that contains all the addictive MSG, preservatives, and flavor enhancers in it. I felt totally fine and really excited about the future. My juices gave me plenty of energy for my day, and I never felt hungry. My stomach was never as full as it would be from a big meal, but I was never hungry where all I could think about was food. I started having some days where I had amazing energy and other days I felt blah and didn't have the motivation to accomplish much that day. About 3 days in I noticed that when I opened my eyes in the morning, I was fully alert and awake, like a light switch had been flipped in my brain. No coffee needed! It's amazing to experience what our bodies are meant to feel like. The only downer is that I expected to lose weight as quickly as Bogdan and his brother did when they did a 15-day juice fast, but I've really been struggling at different points and have not even touched their numbers though I started out with 44 pounds of extra weight. I've lost 27 pounds to date, which is still a good number, and definitely better than nothing, so I'll take it.
I'll save the rest for another post, because there are still some things I haven't mentioned. I'll finish up with a me 'before' and me after 15 days of juicing. I lost 6 pounds in the first 7 days and 5 more in the next 8 to make a total of 11 pounds lost. Like I said, it wasn't the number I was hoping for, but moving in the right direction is always a good thing. I quickly realized, however, that I would not be losing amazing numbers and it also confirmed what I always suspected--my body just doesn't want to let go of those pounds no matter what I do!
Five for Friday: week four
Friday, October 4, 2013
1. I switched things up on my counter so the kids could reach the bowls easily, and I added Mr. Whale for the sponge.
2. Look who's in her Bumbo now! She'll only tolerate it for a few minutes, though.
3. One of my favorite lunches, proving simple is always best--grean beans, toasted almonds, butter/oil, salt.
4. My beautiful new book. Every recipe looks delicious.
5. The kids got to dress crazy for school today. Mila did crazy hair but chickened out with the crazy clothes. Ben went all out with the crazy clothes, wearing his soccer pants with a jacket and tie, but decided to leave the hair alone. Olivia chickened out completely.
Hope your Friday is going swimmingly!

Fact
A reminder to myself today that things won't happen for themselves. If I want change, I have to change things. It's easy to let life just happen, to coast on cruise control as one day bleeds into the next. The things we really want to do are always on the back burner, saved for a later date when we'll have more time for them. That's exactly how you end up at the end of your life and wonder what just happened. Reading this fires me up inside! Hope your Friday is off to a good start!

Being a little bit selfish
I mentioned recently how run down I've been feeling, like my world is spinning faster than I would like, with no way to put on the brakes. I'm always busy, but it just seems like busywork because there's nothing to show for it in the end. It's not like my house ends up particularly clean, or my ironing pile ever completely disappears, or the kitchen floor stays spotless longer than half an hour. I could spend three hours on dinner, and it just gets eaten and I have to do it all over again the next day. Sometimes being a stay-at-home mom feels really unrewarding because of all the housework involved.
So I've been trying to change things and enjoy life a bit more. I don't want my years to fly by and I didn't even stop to enjoy them, you know? I went out to lunch and coffee recently, and that was huge because I just haven't been seeing ANYone lately. I'm learning how to just schedule things into my day, and let other things fall as they may. If I don't get dinner done because of it, so be it. If the laundry waits another day to be folded, so be it. I picked up a book for the first time in months, and finished it. I took some naps, which is also big for me. I am an anxious person, and when I know I have things to get done I find it hard to let my mind relax and stop so I can fall asleep. I feel like I'm wasting time when I'm napping, but I know how little energy and patience I have for the kids when I'm tired. I got to watch season three of Downton Abbey. That show is so fascinating, I love it! It's almost like reading a good novel that never ends. We even got to catch up with friends one Sunday recently at our house. It's been good. I'm more balanced, and I don't feel resentful. It's nice to be selfish sometimes...

Quote from my Pinterest.
Matchy matchy
One Sunday after church I realized everyone matched, with their pink, white, and brown, (with a touch of blue) outfits. Yay! I shooed everyone outside for a few pictures, against their will, of course, and these are what I got.
I love my family. Some days are so frustrating, and some days are just plain exhausting, but I love being a mother. I always wanted to be a young mom, I always wanted to be independent and make my own life for myself, and I always loved babysitting everyone else's kids. So now I have my own to babysit. ;) Looks like I got just what I wanted, ha ha!
I ask for God's help every day to be a good mother to these children He's entrusted us with, because I fail somehow every day. But I know despite our failures and shortcomings, He calls us to try again each morning, to strive to be more like Him each day. And I know He will help me, and He will help you, if you ask for it. He is working a good work inside me. It will not be complete until I leave this earth, but with his grace and mercy, B and I can raise these kids to serve Him and love Him with all their hearts. That's the only thing that matters in the end.
I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.

Decorate: orange ivory Moroccan entry
dresser // chair // rug // planter // lamp // boxes // pendant // print
The dresser with the chair are my favorite thing about this entry concept. The intricate detail of the inlay contrasted by the bright orange in such a modern shape--I'm all about it. I would put the lamp on the other side of the dresser, the photo above it, the rug underneath, and the planter and horn boxes on top. Perfect little entry, if I do say so myself. If I came in and was greeted by this set-up, I would definitely want to come all the way in and see the rest of the house!

Five for Friday: week three (on a Monday)
Tuesday, October 1, 2013
1. My stoneware mug collection is growing.
2. This peanut is always lifting her head (and legs), trying to get up or out of things. Poor thing tries so hard!
3. I thrifted some vintage Christmas ornaments to add to my collection.
4. A new-to-me vintage book. I usually buy these for the pretty spine, but I may actually read this one.
5. Ben and Mila really miss Naomi when they're in school, and always flock to her when they get home. We all need ourselves a Naomi fix every once in a while!

Dating again
We have been able to go on more dates in the last four weeks than the last four months combined. Natalia and I decided we would take turns watching each other's kids so we could get away for a few hours as often as we can manage it, guilt-free. We don't have a regular babysitter, and frankly, I'm not itching to have to pay one either. It's almost easier to just stay home, you know? And now we don't have to feel guilty our parents are watching our kids after work while we're out having fun.
On our first date we went up in the mountains overlooking the city with burritos, dessert, and coffee and just chatted and relaxed. It was just what we needed, and we realized just how much a change of scenery does us good.
This past weekend we went on a bike ride along the river, had gyros and hummus for dinner, then rode back in the dark with flashlights strapped on to our handlebars that we bought last-minute at the drug store. Pretty exciting stuff! Again, just the change of scenery was sooo nice for us. I've noticed that B gets consumed with work problems and can't change gears and just focus on having a good time together. It's almost like we've forgotten how to talk about anything else. So we're working on leaving all our problems and work concerns behind and not talking about them when we're on a date. It's the biggest happiness-buster there is, and that's no fun on a date! We've not been that successful yet, but I'm sure we'll get there.
We owe Natalia and Yury a date now, and then who knows what we'll think of doing next! ;) All I know is I can't wait.
xoxo,
Tanya
