We are growing up

When you hit 30, to me that means you're really a grown-up now. So Natalia, it's time to start acting your age, okay? :) No, seriously, Natalia is much more grown-up than me, and so smart, and thoughtful and responsible. I am so thankful for a sister like you. What kind of person would I be without all those lovely memories of us growing up together? All those fights? All the hair pulling? That's what happens when you're a year and a half apart and share a room your whole lives.

Natalia's husband and I threw a surprise party for her last weekend and I had so much fun doing it. The menu was really taken care of without me, so all I had to do was clean up the house and figure out the logistics. I wanted to spend as little as possible, so it turned out maybe a little too floral for Natalia's taste, but that's what I had on hand, so please forgive me. I didn't try to come up with any color scheme, which is always hard to stick to when you're shopping for various items. There's always something that doesn't come in that color.

I started with the fringe numbers I knew I wanted to try to make, and since the other colors in my package of tissue paper just weren't doing it for me, I went with blue and lavender. A couple hours and lots of patience later, I had my fringey numbers. I moved on to the fabric banners I knew I wanted to make for the photo backdrop, and I picked out some coordinating fabrics from my stash of vintage sheets for that. Then I picked the tablecloth and backdrop fabric, which both turned out to have lots of blues and turquoises. Since a color theme was happening (organically) I went with shades of blue balloons and turquoise plates. I got two jumbo balloons for the photo booth, but really, they didn't end up in too many photos. At least the tissue paper streamers I added to them jazzed up the space with their sparkle. There was some pink and yellow in there too, for good measure, and...we had ourselves a party!

I have to say, I am tired of this darkness and am completely ready for summer light so my pictures stop turning out so grainy and fuzzy. Trust me, there were sooo many outtakes. January is always a hard month for me, when I've had enough winter but things are still so gray and bleak all around me and spring is still months away. Sun will feel good on my skin again...

xoxo,
Tanya

  2. Um, at least two hours? :) It was fun to try out a technique I've seen, so it's all worth it.

  3. Hey just saw this--I loved the party decor--what do you mean too many florals? I love your vintage fabrics. It was so nice to be surrounded by people I love to help me ring in my 30's--a fun, laid-back party--just right. And your photos look so good, especially for it being dark--that birthday cake looks like it's gonna jump off the screen! Thanks for helping Yury put together such a lovely surprise for me. And you're also smart, and thoughful, and responsible...:)
