October on my phone

Saturday, December 7, 2013

This was our October. Even though it's December now, the OCD in me won't let me just skip a month, so I'm posting it. In October we saw the leaves fall, decorated our house with lots of little pumpkins, finished up the soccer season, went bowling and to the arcade, celebrated Mila's 7th birthday with family, the kids went to Seattle to visit family while B and I and Naomi stayed home, went to the pumpkin patch (twice), Naomi got two teeth and a cold, I started my juice fast, and the weather got cold. I was pretty burned out this month from soccer five days a week (never again) and a needy, teething baby, so it really flew by for me. I didn't get to take those walks I was dreaming about in the perfect fall temps that only last a couple weeks here. I didn't gather acorns or pinecones or leaves for a garland. The days flew by and soon the trees were bare and it was cold outside. Next year will be the year for all those things.

N at 5 months

I'm trying to soak in all her chubbiness and all those baby expressions that cross her face. Those lines in her wrists and rolls all up her arms are the best! At 5 1/2 months, Naomi's super long and super heavy. The kids aren't able to hold her for more than a minute, and she's heavy for me too. We definitely have giant babies in our family! She has completely outgrown her baby car seat, so that by the time we bought her a new one, the straps weren't buckling, and definitely not with a coat on. I had to carry her around wrapped in blankets in this cold Idaho weather until we figured out what we wanted to buy.

Naomi is now sporting two brand new teeth, and they are the cutest thing ever! She started solids this month, and we are trying out all kinds of new flavors to see what she likes. She loves her jumperoo a lot, which is so nice when I need to put her down. I can't lay her down on the floor without being right there because she'll roll  and hit her head on something in two seconds flat. She's also good at getting stuck under chairs, sofas, etc. She loves her toys and is always chewing on one of them. She's gotten really good at reaching for them herself, and particularly loves this little book I got her, I'm guessing because of the bright colors and high contrast. I think it's pretty too, Naomi! :)

Our love for this little babe has just grown and grown, and the longer she's with us, the more we can't imagine our lives without her. She was always meant to be with us. I just hope we don't all spoil her too much! I have to say, it's really fun to have a baby in the house when the other kids are a bit older. They enjoy her too, and I only have one in diapers--win-win.

Sisters

"Sisters are different flowers from the same garden."

"Our roots says we're sisters, our hearts say we're friends."

"Sisters annoy, interfere, criticize. Indulge in monumental sulks, in huffs, in snide remarks. Borrow. Break. Monopolize the bathroom. Are always underfoot. But if catastrophe should strike, sisters are there. Defending you against all comers." -Pam Brown

Girls

We are a family of girls. Sorry Ben and B, you guys are totally outnumbered! Even though sometimes they drive me up the wall and bring out the worst in me, I love these girls of mine with all my heart. The littlest one likes to drive me crazy now as well, but we'll have to forgive her for that. ;)

Olivia is our girly girl that likes to dress up in princess outfits and dance around the house being beautiful. She loves lip gloss, perfume, jewelry. Mila, on the other hand, is more of a tomboy and likes to be comfortable most of all. She likes to look nice, but doesn't over think it. She loves braids in her hair. She was never into dolls too much, never took an interest in Barbies, and loves a lot of the same things Ben likes (especially soccer). Her and Ben have become really good friends in the last few months, and it warms my heart to see it. I didn't expect it since they're over 3 years apart and Olivia and Mila are only a year and 9 months apart, so it's interesting to witness. They love to play board games together, play trampoline games, listen to Adventures in Odyssey on the radio, and have sleepovers in Ben's room on the weekends. Olivia lives in her own little world these days, a bit more separate from them, but I bet this will change as she gets older. The older two find her annoying sometimes, ha ha!

Oh, these kids of mine... Some days are so frustrating and draining when no matter how many times I say to keep their backpacks out of the walkway, or put their coats and shoes away, or to put their dishes in the sink, or keep the bathroom tidy, it's like they never heard me. I thank God for his grace in moments like these, because I need it often when I lose my temper or do things with a begrudging heart instead of out of love and with patience and kindness. I still have so much to learn about being a parent, but I am so thankful for all 3 of my girls and my boy. I don't know what I'd do without them.

Baby girl at 4 months

I don't remember every detail of Naomi at four months since it was back in September (!), but I know she did a lot of growing and changing and perfecting during that time. She was still drooling like a leaky faucet, waiting on her teeth to pop through, and she was perfecting rolling front to back and back to front. Her new thing was picking her head up as if she's about to sit up, like she's doing a few pictures up. She was constantly practicing it, getting her abs in shape for rolling and sitting. She was holding toys better, loved to stand (like always), and grew like a weed. No more crying after a bath, either. Now she's taking the few seconds of cold like a champ before I get her wrapped in a towel. The cutest thing is how she gets perfectly still when I clean her ears, no matter how hyper she was right before. So funny! She got a new jumperoo to keep her entertained, but it took her a while to warm up to it. Her favorite spot is in someone's arms, and she was needing a lot of it what with her teeth trying to make their way out. We love our little Naomi girl!

In that last picture I laid her down on the ugliest but warmest blanket ever (ha ha) so I could finish getting ready to go out, and I noticed while up there that it was really quiet downstairs. I came down to this sweetness. Which is amazing, because none of my kids ever just zonked out anywhere but their bed.

60 days of juicing

I don't even know how to start. I just realized I took two months off from blogging, and I didn't even know I was going to do it. Sometimes life happens when you have other plans, right? This picture is what was going on at the time, and now just a little bit later everything's different and it's all about Christmas! I've missed this place, and I'm glad to be back! Just don't have any expectations of me being at all consistent with my posting schedule. :) It's always hard for me to squeeze blogging in my day anyway, but then I guess it just became too much. From the time I get up to the time I lay down to sleep I'm doing, doing, doing, trying to get ahead and check things off my list, and it just hasn't been working. So I took a different approach and have tried to slow down lately and let myself slack a bit. And it's felt gooood.

A lot has happened in the past two months, but the biggest thing, as many of you Instagram followers know, is I've been on a juice fast since October 20th. I'm on day 47 and I have only 13 more to go to reach my goal of 60 days!! I've been itching to try it since sometime during my pregnancy when I watched all these health nut documentaries on Netflix, but I knew I had to wait until I was done nursing Naomi to start. Well, I had been slowly running out of breastmilk, and then all of a sudden my supply took a sharp nosedive when Naomi was teething and really unhappy, and I made the decision to stop altogether at the 4-month mark. I bought my first 5-day supply of fruit and veggies and the next day I was juicing. I can't believe it's been 2 months since I stopped breastfeeding, and it makes me sad to think about it, but at least Naomi got 4 good months of milk out of it.

My reasons for the juice fast--1) I wanted to lose weight and 2) I wanted to see if it would heal my arthritis. Joe Cross from the Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead documentary set out on a 60-day juice fast to lose weight and heal an autoimmune disease he had, and he succeeded! Watching his journey was so inspiring for me, and I vowed I would give it a try. Rheumatoid arthritis is also an autoimmune disease, so I was really hopeful that my body would heal itself through the juicing process just like his did. I'm so happy to report that I feel a million times better! I wouldn't say it's gone, but the pain doesn't bug me throughout my day at all! The best way to really test my joints out is to start working out or running daily and see what happens then.

The most amazing thing to me, however, has been how my knee has improved so drastically in such a short time! It just floors me. My RA doctor told me that once damage occurs to joints, it can't be reversed, so when I realized my knee was hurting more and more over a period of weeks when I stood on it, and then I couldn't put pressure on it at all because of the pain, I became so discouraged. I figured this was the beginning of the end for me. I knew I hadn't hurt my knee and that it was most likely an arthritic nodule that was causing the pain. It felt like a pebble was imbedded under my skin. I am still in awe at the way God, in his infinite wisdom, designed the human body, and I'm so thankful he opened my eyes and gave me the wisdom and knowledge to help my body heal.

We are meant to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and to eat whole foods instead of the processed, packaged foods we consume today. And we are not meant to have access to all the sugar we eat today either. It's so simple--if we give our body what it needs, it will heal itself and prevent diseases from developing in the future. It will be a well-oiled machine that functions at its highest level, without energy drinks or coffee or steroids to improve our performance. I wish we were all taught that in school. We don't need fancy drugs with a list of side effects a mile long. We don't need elaborate surgeries, or chemo, or radiation. Those things all have a place, but if we all knew to take care of our bodies naturally before resorting to other methods, I think we would all be better for it. And God knows our insurance premiums would be lower.

When I started juicing, I didn't feel horrible before I felt better. It may be because I ate my fair share of vegetables already, and I have never bought much packaged food that contains all the addictive MSG, preservatives, and flavor enhancers in it. I felt totally fine and really excited about the future. My juices gave me plenty of energy for my day, and I never felt hungry. My stomach was never as full as it would be from a big meal, but I was never hungry where all I could think about was food. I started having some days where I had amazing energy and other days I felt blah and didn't have the motivation to accomplish much that day. About 3 days in I noticed that when I opened my eyes in the morning, I was fully alert and awake, like a light switch had been flipped in my brain. No coffee needed! It's amazing to experience what our bodies are meant to feel like. The only downer is that I expected to lose weight as quickly as Bogdan and his brother did when they did a 15-day juice fast, but I've really been struggling at different points and have not even touched their numbers though I started out with 44 pounds of extra weight. I've lost 27 pounds to date, which is still a good number, and definitely better than nothing, so I'll take it.

I'll save the rest for another post, because there are still some things I haven't mentioned. I'll finish up with a me 'before' and me after 15 days of juicing. I lost 6 pounds in the first 7 days and 5 more in the next 8 to make a total of 11 pounds lost. Like I said, it wasn't the number I was hoping for, but moving in the right direction is always a good thing. I quickly realized, however, that I would not be losing amazing numbers and it also confirmed what I always suspected--my body just doesn't want to let go of those pounds no matter what I do!
